Ocean rower Ralph Tuijn to continue journey towards Australia
Castricum, the Netherlands, april 8th., 2008. Dutchman Ralph Tuijn will try and finish his Zeeman Ocean Challenge. Tuijn, who aimed to row solo, non stop and without assistance from Peru to Australia, was forced to stop at Fiji last December because of the La Nina phenomena and approaching hurricanes.
It remained uncertain for a while whether or not Tuijn was going to be able to continue his epic journey but with the aid of sponsors this is now guaranteed.
Tuijn will fly from The Netherlands to Fiji on April 16th where he will start to make preparations. He aims to depart Fiji on May 1st to set a course to Brisbane, Australia. With the hurricane season past and the La Nina effects waiving off Tuijn expects to be at sea for some two months.
The last part of the 1500 mile journey will be the most challenging. Tuijn will need to navigate through shallow waters with numerous small islands and reefs. With his crash last summer on the Atafu atoll still in the back of his head Tuijn realizes that he will need to navigate very thoroughly. “I will do everything in my power to stay clear of any reef or island but the currents can be very traitorous so I have to remain cautious” said Tuijn.
People can follow Tuijn’s journey on the expedition website: www.zeemanoceanchallenge.com. This website features regular updates and pictures and also constant updates of his last known position.
With this project Tuijn is raising money for a children’s orphanage in India. People can support him in this via the website.
