"I managed to row a bit further in the right direction again today giving a much better distance than yesterday, but 26 miles still isn't really enough to be called speedy progress. The day was mainly sunny, but every so often a small shower formed above me, and the wind and waves changed drastically now and then as well, though it wasn't as bad as yesterday. It's a shame some water had got into the bag with the Cappuccinos and Vienna Melanges; most of the packages have gone mouldy, as have their contents. I'll still drink it if it's not too bad, though, but cold mouldy Vienna Melange that doesn't dissolve or foam properly and has a nasty aftertaste is never a brilliant experience. Plus you're reminded of that mouldy taste when you burp half an hour later."
"I tried fishing for a bit again in the evening, but to no avail.
Winnie had included a film tape of life in Holland in the package that was sent to Atafu. It was really great to see Isis; she's grown an awful lot and got quite cheeky. It's about time I did something about that.
The wind, waves and currents were at odds with each other yet again in the evening, so there was no possibility of the boat staying on course when I wasn't rowing. That'll be another load of miles lost in the night, and I'll be going the wrong way as well. That resulted in a lot of swearing out there on the ocean when I found out; the Pacific really seems to be against me and is doing its level best to hold me back. No, nature's not mild, it's merciless and hard as steel."
